LAKEWOOD, WA — The Lakewood library will be temporarily relocated later this summer.

The Lakewood Pierce County Library, located at 6300 Wildaire Rd SW, will be shutting its doors on June 5. It will be replaced by a temporary location by the end of 2022. The exact location has not yet been announced, though organizers say they are looking for space in Lakewood Towne Center.

"Closing the building will give staff time to move books and materials, computers and equipment, as well as furniture for use in the short-term location," the Pierce County Library System said in a news release. "Watch for specific closure dates for early June on the Library’s website and at the Lakewood Library."

Architects recently evaluated the 59-year-old library building, and found that it needs its roof, elevator, HVAC system and plumbing looked at. All combined, the repairs would cost up to $15 million.

"At this point, costs to repair and maintain the buildings far outweigh the value of the properties," said Pierce County Library Executive Director Georgia Lomax. "We are committed to providing quality library services for Lakewood residents."

Right now, the Library System says it does not plan on repairing or renovating the old building, though it will follow the guidance of a community advisory committee, which will make its recommendation to the Pierce County Library’s Board of Trustees later this fall. That committee will also determine the fate of the Tillicum branch, which needs about $2.4 million in repairs to fix up its windows, doors and a damaged roof.
