"The Ultimate Feedback": Helmet Technology Saved JBLM Soldier's Life

Sgt. Roger Daniels of the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade was reunited with the helmet that blocked a bullet from his head last year in Afghanistan.

Sgt. Roger Daniels was on his first mission with the 201st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade in Afghanistan.

He wasn't expecting to get shot in the head in an ambush, but he expected even less that his helmet would help him walk away with just a few cuts and a concussion.

On Friday, Master Sgt. Benjamin Owens of Program Executive Office Soldier presented him with the same helmet that saved him on Aug. 21, 2012. PEO is constantly looking for feedback from soldiers about how well the equipment it tests is working. PEO employs scientists, doctors and engineers as well as soldiers.

Owens cited the improved technology with the materials as the saving grace for Daniels, who is only 22 years old.

"It was the ultimate feedback," he said.

Daniels' unit's supply sergeant, Sgt. Gene Miller, helped him get the helmet back, which he intends to keep.

"I think it's great that my unit would do something like this for me," Daniels said. "I never thought it would save my life, but it did."
