Combatting the Financial Abuse of Elders

America’s aging population has unfortunately been accompanied by an alarming increase in crimes against vulnerable adults. Washington State’s Adult Protective Services (APS) program received 14,577 reports of abuse, abandonment and financial exploitation in 2009 alone, with financial exploitation representing more complaints than any other kind of mistreatment. Financial exploitation encompasses many acts including theft; getting an older person to sign a deed, will or power of attorney through deception, coercion or undue influence; the use of deception, false pretense or dishonest acts for financial gain; and direct marketing scams. These crimes can leave seniors destitute and significantly compromise the legacies they hope to leave to family, friends and charitable organizations.

This program will feature a panel of professionals from the legal, law enforcement, financial planning and elder care backgrounds who will educate you on indicators of financial exploitation, proactive legal tools, remedies that financial institutions can pursue and how to report financial abuse.
