'Forgetful' Elderly Resident Crashes into Tree at Mary Wayte Pool — Mercer Island Police Blotter

An 87-year-old resident who crashed his car into a tree near Mary Wayte Municipal Pool on July 11 was unharmed but appeared disoriented, and was ordered to take a driving test, Mercer Island Police said.

The man was driving west on the 8800 block of SE 40th Street near Mary Wayte Pool when he veered off the road, striking a tree at 6:04 p.m.

The driver said he was returning home from shopping in Bellevue, when his foot became stuck under the brake pedal and he then purposely veered off the road to avoid traffic.

The car he was driving, a Chrysler LHS, suffered mechanical damage to the engine in the crash. Police and a witness noted he driver appeared erratic and forgetful. Police ordered the man take a DOL driving test before he begins driving again.

Car Prowled in Mercerwood
Unknown suspects prowled a unlocked Toyota Camry parked on the side of the road on the 4000 block of 97th Ave. SE. The 26-year-old owner, an Olympia man, said the glove box had been broken into, but nothing was stolen.

Fraudulent Verizon Account Opened in Woman's Name
A 42-year-old resident of a home on the 6700 block of 81st Ave. SE reported receiving a bill from Verizon for a phone account that she did not open at 11 a.m. The total amount owed was under $1,500.

Car Vandalized in Tarywood Neighborhood
The rear window of a Buick Park Avenue was shattered sometime overnight while it was parked near a home on the 8800 block of SE 72nd Place. The vehicle was not entered, and damages were estimated at $200.

Teen Credit Card Charged $235, Stolen in Car Prowl on Forest Ave SE
The 18-year-old victim of a vehicle prowl on the 4700 block of Forest Ave. SE reported that his credit card, stolen in the car break-in, was recently used at a variety of locations in Seattle. Fraudulent charges amounted to $235.

Woman Scammed Out of $1,485 Over Florida Property
Mercer Island Police told a 45-year-old resident that they were unable to solve a June 1 fraud case involving her rental property in Florida. Someone representing themselves as a property manager fraudulently demanded a payment of $1,485 be wired to an address in the United Kingdom.

Wanted on MI, Seattle Scofflaw Caught in Renton
A 34-year-old Seattle man was arrested on a Mercer Island warrant in Renton by Kent Police at 3:47 p.m. Mercer Island Police officers transported and booked the man into the Issaquah jail.
