Fred Hutch Obliteride Bike Riders To Circle Mercer Island Aug. 10

Hundreds of Fred Hutch Obliteride riders will pedal around Mercer Island and other Puget Sound communities on Aug. 10, raising funds to help Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center obliterate cancer. Organizers are encouraging people to make signs and come out and cheer on the riders as they circle the Island.

Maps of the 50- and 100-mile bike routes that spin through Mercer Island can be found on obliteride.org.

This year, organizers have added a new way to support the lifesaving work at Fred Hutch. People who want to join the cancer crushing event can also lace up their sneakers for the new 5K run or grab the family and enjoy a leisurely 5K walk. The Obliteride 5K starts at the University of Washington and winds down the Burke-Gilman trail to Gas Works Park, where participants will be treated to a finish line celebration.

Every participant gets an all-inclusive ticket to Obliteride weekend, which includes two parties at Seattle’s Gas Works Park, complete with a Tom Douglas dinner and live entertainment. “We’re thrilled to announce Rainbow Kitten Surprise is taking a break from its sold-out national tour to headline this year’s kickoff party,” said Andrea Gomes Morrison, director of Fred Hutch Obliteride. “Imagine an evening on Lake Union enjoying awesome music and connecting with your friends and other like-minded people determined to help Fred Hutch cure cancer. It’s such an inspiring weekend!”

Every dollar raised goes to innovative research at Fred Hutch. Obliteride has funded a variety of research projects, including immunotherapy and studies related to brain, breast, lung, ovarian and prostate cancers.

Fred Hutch’s pioneering research has saved hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide since its doors opened in 1975, and it is one of the world’s leading research organizations. Hutch scientists are working to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases.
