Nancy Gordon, 'Lice Knowing You' Highlighted in Forbes Magazine as Entrepreneurial Success

Mercer Island lice removal clinic Lice Knowing You, listed in the July 2013 issue of Forbes Magazine, currently operates six locations in Washington and Oregon, with plans to expand to California and Arizona.

Forbes Magazine, focused on entrepreneurs in its July 2013 issue, has taken notice of Mercer Island's lice removal clinic Lice Knowing You and listed them in the top 10 of "Crazy Brand Names at Growing Chains".

"I've always liked puns and plays on words," said owner Nancy Gordon at Forbes.com, "and I wanted to take away the stigma and stress of lice removal."

Gordon had the idea to open a lice removal clinic after her elementary school aged daughter came home with lice. Having a son with Autism, Gordon did not want to bring chemicals into her home so she created a formula that would eliminate lice safely and effectively.

Lice Knowing You opened their doors in March 2007 on Mercer Island. Since that time, Gordon has opened 5 other clinics in Seattle and Portland, OR – with plans to expand into California and Arizona. In addition, Lice Knowing You also manufactures a brand of natural, organic and pesticide free lice prevention and removal products.

For those families living in the Pacific Northwest, Lice Knowing You is offering a free end-of-summer lice check when a Lice Knowing You Lice Prevention Camp Pak and a lice check are purchased.

“We want to teach parents to be proactive in preventing head lice,” Gordon said. “Yes, we treat head lice in our clinics – but we also want to educate the public to help prevent lice from being such a problem in our communities. We’re here to help – if you have lice or if you want to prevent it.”

According to PubMed Health, a federally-funded online medical resource, Lice are common in close to 1 in 10 children before the age of 11. Gordon said only 60 percent of people who have head lice itch their scalp as a reaction to the saliva of the louse. Others detect no signs or symptoms until they find a bug crawling on their forehead.

Gordon instructs families to follow some simple rules to help prevent lice throughout the summer.

“Bottom line, never share hair accessories or hats, helmets, sweatshirts, towels, etc. Children should not hang towels or bags next to each other or place them in piles. Have children wear long hair in braids or ponytails and boys should keep their hair short. And, we always stress “to once a week – take-a-peek”. Take 5 minutes to check your child’s head, once a week, to ensure a clean, happy and lice free home.”

Lice Knowing You clinics are located in Mercer Island, Mill Creek, Federal Way, Wallingford, WA, Beaverton and Portland, OR.
