The city of Mercer Island announced two public meetings in the next few weeks of August to solicit input on a remodel of the Mercer Island Thrift Shop, proposed by the city's Youth and Family Services (MIYFS) department.
Major changes to the Thrift shop include plans for a 2,000 square-foot expansion and doubling of parking capacity, according to the Mercer Island Reporter. The newspaper also reported the cost of the project was expected to cost the city $1.56 million.
The first meeting is on Aug.13, from 6-8 p.m., and the second on Aug. 28, from 3-5 p.m., and meetings will include brief presentations.
Goals of the remodel include:
- Reduce constricted flow of traffic on SE 34th Street
- Increase parking for Parks patrons and Thrift Shop customers while reducing street congestion
- Create separate donation drop-off area
- Improve storefront appearance
- Increase revenues, which directly underwrite MIYFS counseling services
"Thrift Shop staff and City administrators are committed to being good neighbors," a city news release said. "The public's input will help steer the final design."
