200+ Puyallup Rabbits Need Foster Homes

The Humane Society is looking for community help to care for an unprecedented number of rabbits in need. Here's how to pitch in.

PUYALLUP, WA — The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County is looking for neighbors to lend a hand after animal control removed more than 200 rabbits from a Puyallup property. The shelter's veterinarians are still working to assess all the animals and anticipate 223 rabbits of varying ages and conditions will need a home.

"This is a massive undertaking," said Dr. Jennifer Bennett, the shelter's chief veterinary officer. "It's one of the largest intakes our shelter has experienced. We've been working around the clock to prepare for all the care these rabbits will need and we need the community's help."

Due to the unprecedented volume of rabbits and limited space, the shelter is asking anyone who has the ability to provide a temporary home for a rabbit to stop by and fill out an application to be a foster pet parent. Anyone can visit the shelter Friday, Feb. 17, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to sign up, and no experience is necessary.

The shelter will provide each foster parent with information and supplies to care for the animals. Neighbors can also sign up to foster a rabbit on the shelter's website.

For those who are financially able to pitch in, the Humane Society is seeking emergency donations to help support lifesaving care for the animals, and items from the shelter's Amazon wish list can be dropped off Tuesday through Sunday during business hours.
