Canyon Road Construction Project To Begin Next Week

Commuters may want to find different routes to work, as the project is expected to run through Fall 2023.

PUYALLUP, WA — A major construction project along Canyon Road East is set to begin next week, and will likely interrupt commutes for many local drivers.

The project will have crews working along Canyon from about 400 feet north of 84th Street East to 72nd Street East. Work will begin Monday, April 11 and will last through Fall 2023.

During that time, crews will work 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday— and traffic may be shifted around construction during those work hours.

That's likely to cause some pain for commuters, especially in the mornings, but the payoff should be worth it. When finished, the two-lane section of Canyon will be increased to five lanes, two lanes in each direction with a two-way left turn lane. Crews will also be adding new street nights, paved shoulders, curbs, gutters and new traffic signals at the intersections with 72nd Street East and 80th Street East.

When finished, the county says the $7.65 million project will increase public safety, and ultimately reduce congestion along the corridor.
