Car Crashes Into Bethel School District Building, Passenger Killed

The crash was caused when one pickup truck rear-ended another along 176th St E in Spanaway.

SPANAWAY, WA — One person has died after a two-vehicle collision in Spanaway early Tuesday morning.

According to an update from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, deputies first heard of the crash just after 9 a.m., when South Sound 911 dispatchers received a call warning of a serious collision right in front of the Bethel School District office building on 176th St E in Spanaway.

The Sheriff Department's preliminary investigation found that a green truck had rear-ended a white pickup. The white pickup then spun out, hitting a fence and nearby power pole. The green truck, meanwhile, pulled off the south side of the road, colliding with the school district building, where it came to rest.

A passenger inside the green truck was ruled dead at the scene. The green truck's driver survived, but has been taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the white pickup and their passenger also suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

No one inside the Bethel School District building was harmed.

The extent of the damages to the building is unknown. Deputies say the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation. The roadway was closed in both directions for several hours, but eventually reopened shortly after 2 p.m.
