Landslide Danger High As Rain Leaves Puget Sound 'Unusually Saturated'

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement warning of higher landslide risk.

PUYALLUP, WA - In what seems like an almost weekly occurrence this winter - and now spring - forecasters are warning of increased landslide risk due to recent and ongoing rain.

Early Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service put out a special weather statement covering Western Washington warning of heightened landslide risk.

"Another quarter inch to inch of rain will fall across the Western Washington lowlands today and tonight, while soils remain unusually saturated for late March. This will maintain an elevated risk of landslides across the Western Washington lowlands for the next few days," the weather statement says.

However, the state Department of Natural Resources shallow landslide forecast is not highlighting heightened danger locally. In recent weeks, Puyallup and Edmonds have been hit by landslides that have blocked roads and train tracks.

According to the National Weather Service, this is the fourth-wettest March on record since record-keeping began in the 1890s.
