PIERCE COUNTY, WA — The Humane Society of Tacoma & Pierce County is looking for donors to help fund treatment for dozens of animals in need of medical care and shelter.

According to the Humane Society, Tacoma Animal Control discovered more than 40 cats at a home at the end of last month. The shelter has taken nearly 30 of the animals, with more on the way, including some newborn kittens. Five of the kittens are being treated for upper respiratory infections, and one adult cat is critically ill and suffering from dehydration and extreme distress, officials said Tuesday.

Even as staffers worked quickly to warm them, two younger kittens died shortly after arriving at the shelter. Other animals are contending with fear, poor socialization and other health issues.

The Humane Society on Monday also took in a letter of 10 8-week-old German Shepards, which the shelter said were abandoned near a Lakewood business and being evaluated by veterinarians.

Donations this month will help cover the cost of caring for the influx of animals. The Humane Society said a friend of the shelter will triple-match each donation through the end of the month, up to $50,000. Residents can donate and learn more on the Humane Society's website.
