SPANAWAY, WA — A new COVID-19 testing site is opening this week in Pierce County.

Starting Tuesday, Jan. 11, the county will begin hosting a drive-thru testing site at Spanaway Park, located at 14905 Breseman Blvd. S.

The temporary site will be open Tuesday through Saturday each week, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. As with other county-run testing sites, no appointment is necessary and results should arrive within three to five days.

The new site is good news for a region that has been struggling to keep up with a surge in demand for testing. Just last week, the county closed the long-running Lakewood testing site after determining that overcrowding was making the location unsafe.

The county's other site, located at the Washington State Fairgrounds, remains open.

Demand for COVID-19 testing has surged over recent weeks as the omicron coronavirus variant overtook delta to become the dominant COVID-19 strain in Washington state. To keep up with demand, Gov. Jay Inslee on Wednesday announced the state was purchasing 5.5 million more COVID-19 tests.
