TACOMA, WA — The state is lifting its masking requirements for most indoor spaces on Saturday, but judges, lawyers, and anyone else who needs to visit the Pierce County District Court will have to wait just a little bit longer.

The court confirmed Friday that it would be lifting its own face covering requirements as of Monday, March 14. When it does, visitors will not need to wear face coverings and will not be required to socially distance. However, masks will still be allowed and the courthouse will continue to offer free masks and hand sanitizers to anyone who wants either. The courthouse also asks that anyone who is feeling sick avoid the district court.

Meanwhile, Pierce County District Court Probation Services will return for in-person appointments effective on April 1— meaning anyone currently out on probation will need to contact their probation officer and be available for in-person meetings. The District Court Resource Center will also reopen for in-person services on April 1.

The slight delay is likely not much of a surprise to the people who frequent the courthouse. Back in May 2021, when Gov. Jay Inslee rescinded the mask mandate for the first time, the courthouse elected to keep its mandate in place.
