PIERCE COUNTY, WA — Pierce County leaders are sharing a list of reminders and resources as Puget Sound prepares for a rare dose of snow over the long holiday weekend. According to the latest forecasts, most of the lowlands could pick up 3 to 5 inches of snow between Christmas night and Monday evening.

Things will take an even colder turn after the holiday, with unusually frigid temperatures on tap heading into the new year. By Monday, afternoon highs could fall to the high 20s, with overnight lows potentially dipping into the teens. There's a small chance lows could even hit single digits.

Ahead of the wintry blast, here is a list of resources and tips from the county to help residents stay safe:

  • Dress in layers to stay warm and keep clothing dry. Wear a hat to prevent loss of body heat.
  • Use de-icer to melt ice on walkways and driveways. Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow. Push the snow instead of lifting it when possible.
  • Bring pets insides.
  • Stock up on groceries and supplies – it may take time for stores to re-stock.
  • To report a power outage, call Puget Sound Energy at 1-888-225-5773 or report it online.
  • When driving, if the power is out and traffic signals are not working, treat the intersection as an all-way stop. To report road issues, visit PierceCountyWa.gov/Works or call (253) 798-6000.
  • Sign up for winter weather alerts from the county.
  • To prevent frozen and broken pipes, wrap outside pipes with insulation and let cold water drip from faucets.
  • Prepare for power outages and take precautions when using alternate heating methods.
  • Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning: If your electricity is out, only use a generator outside. Charcoal or gas grills should also only be used outside.

If the county ends up opening emergency warming shelters, information on those shelters can be found by calling Pierce County Emergency Management at (253) 798-7470 or calling 211.
