CARBONADO, WA — The Pierce County Sheriff's Department is investigating after a pair of hikers stumbled upon human remains over the weekend.

According to deputies, the duo had been hiking in a remote area near Carbonado early Sunday afternoon when they found the remains and called 911. Sheriff's Department deputies and a search and rescue coordinator met up with the hikers, who led them to the discarded remains.

Deputies returned Monday to gather up the remains for further study. Right now, investigators say it's too early to determine a cause of death, but they are working with the Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office to identify the remains and learn more.
