King County Council Votes On Public Funds For Safeco Field Upkeep

The funding package would also shift millions of dollars away from tourism and put it toward affordable housing.

SEATTLE, WA – The King County Council is voting Monday on a plan to use public funds for upkeep at Safeco Field. The proposal would also shift more than $100 million to affordable housing from tourism.

The Mariners will be getting $135 million in taxpayer funds over the next 25 years for projects such as painting the retractable roof.

Meanwhile, the package delivers a big hit to the city's tourism industry.

While Visit Seattle and other groups had received $109 million in funding, the new package only provides $8 million. The rest of the money will be shifted to affordable housing.

The city's tourism industry says that they need the money to help attract conventions to the city as well as sports events and Hollywood films.
