📰 News we're reading

1. West Seattle's only overnight shelter warns it may shut down as donations plummet (westsideseattle.com) — West Seattle’s only overnight cold‑weather shelter says it will pause overnight beds starting December 31 unless it can quickly raise about $50,000, leaving 36 people without a local place to sleep. The volunteer‑run Westside Neighbors Shelter on SW Alaska Street will keep serving daily meals and warm‑up hours, and will open overnight only during King County‑declared severe weather events while it seeks emergency community funding.

2. A very Die Hard movie debate with Dyer Oxley and Bill Radke (kuow.org) — Seattle public radio fans get a holiday treat as KUOW hosts Dyer Oxley and Bill Radke square off over whether “Die Hard” really counts as a Christmas movie. The special episode comes via KUOW’s arts podcast and includes a pitch to support the Seattle Now show and share local story ideas by email or voicemail.

3. Louisiana volunteers bring relief to flooded communities in Washington (wwltv.com) — Heavy flooding across western Washington has pushed rivers to historic levels, with evacuations and damage extending into the Seattle area as volunteers race to help. Louisiana-based Red Cross teams and the United Cajun Navy are in the region, coordinating shelters, food drives at Lewis‑McChord Air Base south of Seattle, and large toy donations for displaced families. State officials say recovery will be long even as waters slowly recede.

4. Marijuana farm burglary suspects arrested after crashing into patrol car (kiro7.com) — Seattle police say a burglary suspect was arrested after crashing into a patrol car while fleeing a marijuana farm early Tuesday morning. Three people were caught on video trying to break into the business, but two escaped in a second vehicle. Officers booked the driver who surrendered, and SPD is still searching for the remaining suspects.

5. Washington's 8 Steepest Streets: Fun in Summer, Risky in Winter (kissfm1053.com) — If you’ve ever eyed Seattle’s steep streets and wondered how they compare statewide, this piece rounds up eight of Washington’s steepest roads and talks about the thrill and danger of speeding down them. It recalls a Yakima family’s risky “Bullet” driving game and urges readers to enjoy these hills carefully, especially in winter conditions.
