Sunny Weekend Ahead Poised To Be The Warmest In Months

Most of Western Washington hasn't cracked 70 degrees in over 40 days, but that streak could end by Sunday.

SEATTLE — Summer is practically around the bend, but the way the weather has been lately, it feels like spring has barely even gotten started. Fortunately, Western Washington is in for some long-overdue sunshine and warmer weather starting this weekend.

The latest forecasts from the National Weather Service are predicting that a weak trough will push over the region Saturday, giving way to a ridge of high pressure Sunday. In layman's terms, that means Puget Sound residents can expect a moderate temperatures Saturday, and a warm Sunday, with highs at or slightly above average.

An "at or slightly above average" high wouldn't normally be much to write home about, but as the NWS pointed out Thursday, it's been over 40 days since Western Washington has logged a temperature over 70 degrees, so we'll take what warmth we can get.

Not only will we finally see some springtime temperatures, but the skies should also cooperate nicely. Saturday's weak trough means there is a possibility of a few scattered showers in the afternoon and evening, particularly at higher elevations, but the lowlands should see relatively clear skies. Sunday should be even better, as the heat moves in and burns off any lingering cloud coverage.

Again, the incoming weather would be pretty typical if this was a regular May, but this past week the skies over Western Washington have been particularly fall-like — including one of the coldest Aprils in decades and the wettest first half of May in 78 years — so any break in the clouds is a chance for celebration.

Unfortunately, when the work week begins, the party is over. Monday will still be comparatively warm, with a high in the upper 60s, but skies will only be party sunny, followed by a mostly cloudy Tuesday and a return to rain Wednesday as another weather system rolls in.
