Lessons in Stream Ecology at Third Place Commons, Thurs. March 22
The first of a six-part stream ecology training program will kick off with a Salmon Fashion Show followed by the five steps of How to Adopt A Stream
On Thursday March 22 at 7 p.m.,Β theΒ Adopt A Stream Foundation (AASF) will be presenting a Β Salmon Fashion ShowΒ featuring βSammyΒ theΒ Salmonβ to kick off a six-partΒ Stream Ecology Training Program. Β
Β ThisΒ free eventΒ will take place atΒ theΒ in Lake Forest Parkβs Town Center,Β 17171 Bothell Way NE, Lake Forest Park, one block east ofΒ theΒ Burke Gillman Trail, next to Mac Aleer and Lyon Creeks, two small salmon streams that flow from SW Snohomish County to Lake Washington.Β Β
βSammyΒ theΒ Salmonβ is going to introduceΒ theΒ audience toΒ theΒ life cycle of salmon with some elaborate costumes. Next, AASF Director Tom Murdoch is going to takeΒ theΒ audience throughΒ theΒ five steps ofΒ How to Adopt A Stream: Β

- Develop and Action Plan to meet watershed goals

βAfterΒ theΒ Β audience is βhookedβ withΒ theΒ salmon fashion show, we are going to βreel them inβ by teachingΒ theΒ crowd to becomeΒ Stream PIβsΒ (Private Investigators),β says Murdoch. βWe are going to show them how to investigateΒ thephysical, biological, and chemical characteristics of streams...and their social, and political characteristics as well.β Β ThenΒ theΒ crowd will be invited to become allies to solve a βvirtualΒ fishΒ barrierβ problem.Β TheΒ evening will conclude with some great visual examples of stream protection and restoration projects done by folks who have adopted their streams and an uplifting video of a local elementary school that restored a salmon run to a city stream. Everyone from advanced middle school students to old gray beards will enjoy this event.Β
TheΒ next training session isΒ All About Invasive PlantsΒ on Saturday March 31 outdoors atΒ theΒ Lake Forest Park Grace Cole Nature Park. Β Then back inΒ theΒ classroom on April 12 forΒ Stream and Wetland Science; outdoors on April 28 forDesigning and Planting a Native Plant Landscape;Β back inΒ theΒ classroom forΒ All about Salmon and their Protectionon May 3; and outdoors on September 15 forΒ Native Plant Monitoring & Maintenance.
