📰 News we're reading

1. ‘You can be doing all the right things and still be homeless': More than a thousand kids in Spokane Valley are homeless (spokesman.com) — Spokane Valley schools are serving more than 1,100 homeless students, yet the city has no shelters or temporary housing within its limits, forcing families to rely on Spokane-based services. Local social workers and school leaders describe how high housing costs, low wages, and limited resources are straining families, and explain how federal McKinney-Vento supports help students stay in school despite housing instability.

2. Student Athlete of the Week: East Valley's Chloe Bennett (swxrightnow.com) — Spokane Valley’s East Valley High senior Chloe Bennett is chasing a spot on the Knights’ Wall of Champions after narrowly missing a state wrestling podium last season. Balancing a 3.8 GPA, four AP classes, National Honor Society, and plans for track, she’s aiming to place at the 2A state tournament before continuing both college and wrestling at either WSU or UW.

3. Spokane swiftwater rescue teams on west side to receive state assistance (khq.com) — Spokane Valley Fire Department’s swiftwater rescue team is deployed to Western Washington’s historic flooding, working alongside Spokane firefighters and the National Guard on multiple rescues. Local crews left from Station 5 on Sullivan Road and remain on standby in Skagit and Snohomish counties as more storms and state-mobilized resources arrive.

4. Latest Standings Announced for the 2025 BroadwayWorld Seattle Awards; REEFER MADNESS Leads Best Musical! (broadwayworld.com) — Spokane Valley Summer Theatre is making a strong showing in the 2025 BroadwayWorld Seattle Awards, with “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “The Pirates of Penzance” earning multiple nominations across choreography, lighting, sound, and performance categories. Local favorite Spokane Valley Summer Theatre is also in the running for Favorite Local Theatre, alongside Spokane Civic Theatre and Spokane Falls Spartan Theatre, with voting still shaping the final January results.
