Birthday Benefit to be Held for Longtime Cook at Horseshoe Saloon

A native of California, Tommy McKinney arrived in Seattle in 1988 to work at the Space Needle. He has since become a proud resident of Woodinville and has lived and worked here for more than nine years.

McKinney currently works as the chef at the Horseshoe Saloon. Regulars and new patrons alike can attest that he does more than simply cook for a bar, according to co-worker Kage Nienhuser:

"He serves food, comfort, and friendship to a close knit community. Tommy takes pride in all things he does and has great love and respect for those he serves. He’s a prime example of what makes the Woodinville community great… which is why he is so deserving of our help now.

On May 4, 2010, McKinney was diagnosed with, and had emergency surgery for, colon cancer. While he won this arduous battle, he continues to live with the wounds of his war on cancer. In addition to the financial scars, there are the physical reminders of this disease. McKinney has had diverticulitis, a digestive disease. He has had issues with a fistula that has connected itself between his colon and bladder. He has had countless causes for discomfort and illness, and his condition worsens daily. McKinney requires surgery for these issues, and has no health insurance. With the astronomical costs of cancer care, surgery, and even regular required clinic visits, he is in desperate need of assistance.

While it is never easy to ask for such a great showing of support, we know McKinney is very grateful for any and all who chose to stand up and show their support, Nienhuser said.
