📰 News we're reading

1. Salvation Army jingle bus brings seniors and youth to Glade Springs holiday lights (wvva.com) — Beckley’s Salvation Army is inviting local seniors and youth on its free “Jingle Bus” trips to see the Glade Springs Resort holiday lights, complete with hot chocolate and caroling. Seniors ride Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at 5 p.m., and youth follow on Thursday, December 18, offering festive outings to those who might not otherwise experience the display.

2. SBA awards Mercer, Raleigh schools millions for projects (wvva.com) — Families in Beckley will see big changes at Woodrow Wilson High School after Raleigh County secured $12 million in state funding for the next phase of renovations. Mercer County schools also received millions for upgrades, with both counties planning expanded career, technical, and dual-credit opportunities that aim to keep students college- and career-ready close to home.

3. West Virginia First Foundation to distribute opioid money (wvnstv.com) — Beckley residents are learning that roughly $18 million in opioid settlement funds from the West Virginia First Foundation will be awarded to treatment and recovery programs by the end of 2025. Chairman Greg Duckworth says organizations like day report centers and rehab facilities that applied for grants should know their award amounts by year’s end, with more money arriving over the next decade.

4. Probable cause found in ongoing sexual assault investigation, case will proceed (wvnstv.com) — Beckley residents should know that a magistrate has found probable cause for a Raleigh County man to face multiple charges related to alleged sex crimes against minors, so the case will move forward. The defendant remains jailed after the magistrate refused to reduce his bond, and prosecutors say the case is expected to proceed to Raleigh County Circuit Court at a later date.

5. Emergency vehicles and dealing with the snow (wvnstv.com) — In Beckley’s winter weather, local EMTs and other first responders say snow, ice, and poor visibility can slow emergency vehicles, even with all-wheel drive. JanCare and area agencies coordinate with residents and road crews, asking drivers to cooperate, pull over only where it’s safe, and sometimes clear driveways so ambulances, police, and fire trucks can reach people who need help.
