📰 News we're reading

1. Life returning to normal after flood, partial evacuation of residents at Morgantown area assisted living facility (wvmetronews.com) — Residents at the Evergreen Assisted Living facility just outside Morgantown are back in their rooms after a sprinkler line burst Tuesday, flooding the second floor and briefly forcing 10 people to be transported for care. Multiple agencies, including Mon EMS and the State Fire Marshal’s Office, coordinated the response and safety checks, and cleanup and damage assessments are now underway.

2. Court denies proposed settlement in city panhandling lawsuit (dominionpost.com) — Morgantown residents should know a federal judge has rejected the proposed class-action settlement over the city’s now-repealed panhandling ordinance, saying the parties didn’t justify treating it as a class case. The law is already off the books, but the ruling delays payouts and forces the city and plaintiffs to propose next steps by Jan. 14 while the case continues.

3. Morgantown firefighters receive hands-on training for electric vehicle fires (wboy.com) — Morgantown firefighters are spending three days in specialized training to handle electric vehicle fires, combining classroom lessons with hands-on practice using fire and compression blankets and suppression agents. With Morgantown having the state’s highest per-capita EV ownership, fire officials say staying ahead of evolving technology is critical for protecting local homes and drivers.

4. Morgantown's Maddox Twigg named J.R. House Award recipient for state's top QB after stellar sophomore campaign (dominionpost.com) — Morgantown High quarterback Maddox Twigg has been named West Virginia’s top high school quarterback after leading the Mohigans to the 2025 Class AAAA state championship. The sophomore piled up more than 3,300 yards and 44 touchdowns, including clutch postseason performances against Spring Mills, Jefferson, and Martinsburg. His J.R. House Award win marks a rare individual state honor for MHS football.

5. West Virginia's Professional Charter School Board stays mum on court ruling requiring county referendums (newsandsentinel.com) — Morgantown families with students at West Virginia Academy or Wisdom Academy should watch a new court ruling that could eventually force local referendums on charter schools, though existing schools remain open for now. The state’s Professional Charter School Board quietly discussed the decision in executive session, approved a staff raise, advanced a major grant for a Charleston charter, and reported charter enrollment growth statewide.
