Group Hikes Planned Across Wisconsin To Ring In The New Year

As calendars switch to 2023, state parks across Wisconsin will offer free group hikes, the state Department of Natural Resources said.

WISCONSIN — Jumping into a frigid body of water when January rolls around isn't the only way to ring in the new year in the great outdoors.

If you're hoping to get outside as soon as 2023 hits, but would prefer being fully clothed, take a peek at the numerous "First Day" group hikes offered at state parks across Wisconsin from the state's Department of Natural Resources. For beginner hikers and people new to state parks, the hikes will be a great introduction to winter adventures, the DNR said in a news release.

“Starting the new year by getting outside and being active is refreshing not only for our bodies but also our minds,” said DNR Parks and Recreation Management Director Steve Schmelzer in the news release. “We invite everyone to a First Day Hike in the Wisconsin state park system as a great way to set the tone for the new year.”

Several parks across Wisconsin are offering the free group hikes ranging between 1-3 miles with naturalists and local experts serving as guides. Self-guided hikes are also available for those looking to choose a different pace or difficulty.

Of course, with the hikes scheduled for the top of January in Wisconsin, warm clothing, hats, gloves and warm boots or shoes are recommended.

“Events like First Day Hikes bring together families and individuals, children and seniors, experienced hikers and those looking to dip their mittens into winter recreation. Our park staff is ready to help all visitors find a path that fits,” Schmelzer said.

The hikes will be free to participate in, but a Wisconsin state park sticker or trails pass may be required. If you need a pass, a free one might be available for check out from your local library.

  • Point Beach State Forest

  • Richard Bong State Recreation Area
  • Roche-A-Cri State Park
  • Straight Lake State Park
  • Whitefish Dunes State Park
