WISCONSIN — Voters in Wisconsin will have to prepare photo identification to cast their ballot in the Nov. 8 election for governor, state legislature, U.S. Congress and more.

Many voters will likely be using their state-issued driver's license as a form of identification. These can be used even if driving privileges are revoked or suspended. According to the Wisconsin Elections Commission, other acceptable forms of ID include:

  • An identification card issued by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
  • A state-issued identification card or driver license without a photo because of a religious exemption.
  • A Military ID card issued by a U.S. uniformed service.
  • A U.S. passport.
  • An ID card issued by a federally recognized Indian tribe in Wisconsin.
  • An ID card issued by a Wisconsin-accredited university or college that has the date of issue and signature of student. If the ID is expired, the student must have a document that proves enrollment.

As Wisconsinites gear up for the Nov. 8 election, which is less than a month away, the state's DMV is releasing guidance on how people can obtain a photo ID if they don't have one. People can start the process now online for a free ID that they can use to vote, the Wisconsin DOT said in a news release.

If the documents required are not readily available, the DMV can go through a "Voter ID Petition Process" to obtain information, WisDOT said in a news release. The process is free of charge and can be used quickly to obtain a receipt that people can then take to the polls to vote while the other documents are still obtained, the release said.
