Appleton's Unique History And Vibrant Culture From Hydro-Power To Arts
Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Appleton so special.

Appleton is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Appleton has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.
A few things to know:
- Appleton was the site of the first central-station power plant in the world to create electricity using advancements in hydro-power sites and Thomas Edison’s electrical generators. In 1882, H.F. Rogers and Edison teamed up to build the Vulcan Street Plant, which used hydroelectric power from the nearby Fox River to light up several businesses and homes. You can visit the site today and see a replica of the original generator.
- The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center (PAC) is one of the top venues in the state for live entertainment. From Broadway shows to concerts to comedy acts, there's always something going on at the PAC. Plus, the building itself is a work of art, with a stunning glass facade that reflects the surrounding cityscape.
- Appleton has a vibrant downtown scene, with plenty of shops, restaurants and bars to explore. One of the most popular spots is the Fox River Mall, which boasts over 100 stores and is the largest mall in Wisconsin. If you're looking for something more low-key, check out the Copper Rock Coffee Company, a local favorite that serves up delicious coffee and homemade pastries.
- The Building for Kids Children's Museum is a must-visit for families with young kids. The museum features interactive exhibits that encourage learning through play, including a mini cityscape, a science lab and a music room. Plus, there's a giant indoor slide that kids (and adults) love.
- Appleton is home to Lawrence University, a prestigious liberal arts college that was founded in 1847. The campus is known for its beautiful architecture and stunning natural setting, and the university hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including concerts, plays and lectures.
