1. Appleton committee rejects video machines due to doubt over payouts (postcrescent.com) — Appleton’s Safety and Licensing Committee has rejected licenses for several video gambling-style machines at local bars after police and the assistant city attorney concluded they function like illegal slot machines if they pay out anything of value. The committee instead approved only clearly legal games and sent its recommendations to the Common Council, which will decide on Dec. 17, potentially shaping how many such machines appear in city establishments.

2. Jury convicts man in Appleton overdose death; sentencing date to be determined (fox11online.com) — A local jury has convicted Eric Abresch of first-degree reckless homicide for supplying drugs in a 2022 fatal overdose at an Appleton home, with sentencing still to be scheduled. Police found a 42-year-old Appleton woman unresponsive in an East Winnebago Street apartment, and medical examiners later ruled she died from mixed drug toxicity involving fentanyl and other substances.
   

3. Fox Valley Concert Band looks for new home after UWO Fox Cities closes (wbay.com) — A longtime Appleton-based concert band is scrambling to find a new rehearsal home after losing access to the UWO Fox Cities campus, now controlled by Winnebago County. Members have turned the group into a nonprofit to cover rental and equipment costs while temporarily using spaces like Xavier High School. They hope to return to their old venue but must secure a practice site by January for a March concert.
   

4. Hilton Paper Valley Hotel responds to Fox Cities Exhibition Center management contract dispute (wbay.com) — Appleton’s management contract with the Hilton Paper Valley Hotel for the Fox Cities Exhibition Center expires in less than three weeks, and both sides are still negotiating a new deal or short-term extension. City leaders have offered major concessions and warn there’s no backup plan yet, leaving questions about who will run the center after December 31 if talks stall.
   

5. Former bowling coach sentenced to probation for strangling teen (wbay.com) — A former high school bowling coach from the Appleton area has been sentenced to two years of probation after pleading guilty to strangulation in Outagamie County court. The incident, which happened during a youth bowling practice at a Seymour alley he owns, led the judge to stay a 90-day jail term, order anger management, and require apology letters to the victim and community.
