Brookfield Ordinance Would Change Alderman Districts
The Brookfield Common Council will post its proposal to change aldermanic district maps twice in October.
BROOKFIELD, WI — The Brookfield Common Council announced that it will propose a new ordinance at its next October meeting to alter aldermanic districts.
The redistricting ordinance will be proposed Oct. 5 and will be published twice before Oct. 19, when the council will make a decision on it.
Alderman and members of the public can comment on the Oct. 5 proposal, but the council won't decide on the proposal until Oct. 19.

"This is an obligation under federal and state law that we have to redistrict," Brookfield Alderman Mike Hallquist told Patch. Hallquist said that there were enough population shifts over the past 10 years where some districts were unbalanced.
Maps of the proposed changes have been posted on the city of Brookfield's website. The districts would be divided over 2020 Census data, Hallquist said.

New district maps would have to be drawn in December for the 2022 election, which is why the proposal is in October, Hallquist said. After redistricting passes, some citizens may find their wards or alderpersons changed.
The new ordinance would repeal an older district ordinance and replace it with a new aldermanic map. "The ordinance and exhibits will become effective upon publication following adoption and apply to the 2022 Spring 'non-partisan' Elections and all elections thereafter until officially changed by Common Council action," the resolution said.
Two Brookfield aldermen, Mike Hallquist and Brad Blumer, co-authored a resolution in July to have the city put pressure on the state of Wisconsin for its redistricting plan. The resolution was disapproved by the Legislative and Licensing Committee in August.
