A man was killed when a train hit his vehicle at a railroad crossing Thursday evening on Brookfield Road, police said.

BROOKFIELD, WI — A man was killed when an Amtrak train hit his vehicle Thursday evening at a railroad crossing on Brookfield Road near River Road, according to police.

It happened around 5 p.m. Police said their initial investigation showed the vehicle drove around crossing gates before it was hit by a westbound Amtrak train. Nobody onboard the train was hurt, police said.

After the crash, police said the train crossing may be closed for several days because of the damage to the railroad. Motorists can use Barker Road or Calhoun Road to circumvent the closure.

The driver was in his 60s, police said, and the crash left him with fatal injuries.

The train involved, an Amtrak Empire Builder headed to Seattlefrom Chicago, had 183 passengers and crew on board, a report by TMJ4 news noted.
