Police Report: Burglaries, Jewelry Theft and Lemonade Stand Complaint

The latest police calls also include a dispute about smoking marijuana in a hotel room and a possible squatter in a former school.

A church and two Capitol Drive businesses were the target of burglars, police reports say.

Someone tried to break into , 4470 Pilgrim Rd. Employees on July 29 found tampering with northeastern doors that were slightly ajar. Police were checking video surveillance cameras for evidence.

On July 28, police were called to burglaries at Strawberry Fields salon, 13625 W. Capitol Dr., and , 13665 W. Capitol Dr.

The first salon employee to arrive found a door pried open and muddy footsteps leading to the storage room. Drawers were open but nothing appeared to be missing. 

At Barstool Central the trim on a door was removed. The only thing missing was cash and some loose change from drawers, according to police reports.

Driver with gun? A Slinger man called police July 28 to say he saw a driver of a red Acura pass a black handgun to a passenger near Lilly Road and Overview Drive. Police stopped the car and found it was an unloaded BB gun that the driver had just bought at Gander Mountain. 

Jewelry heist: Jewelry worth more than $50,000 was reported stolen from a Benington Drive home sometime between July 15 and 22. An investigation is ongoing into who might have had access to the home during that time.

Lemonade stand complaint: A caller said a lemonade stand north of the Barker Road-North Avenue roundabout was causing a traffic hazard as children and customers were running across the road. But police responding about 6 p.m. July 25 found no lemonade stand nor traffic problem.

Smoking weed in a hotel room? A guest at , 1200 S. Moorland Road, called police July 29 to complain the hotel was accusing him of smoking marijuana in his room and requiring him to pay a $50 smoke cleaning fee. The 26-year-old Kentucky man insisted he had not smoked in the room and was told it was a civil matter. 

Police officer is good Samaritan: An officer responded to a 911 call about 1 a.m. July 30 after a woman said she heard a loud crash. She thought someone had broken into her condominium in the 2800 block of River Birch Drive. But her kitchen cabinets had fallen down, hanging over her counter, breaking most of the china inside. The officer helped her reach items and support her cabinets until condo employees could be called in the morning.

Fight in progress: An employee at the resale shop, 2405 N. 124th St., called police after a seller became disorderly shortly before 7 p.m. July 29. The employee said the seller had called the shop about 35 times, swearing and threatening employees. When she arrived and started swearing, the employee called police and the woman tried to grab the phone. She threw some items and left. 

Missing keepsake watch: A woman told police she lost a David Yurman brand wristwatch that her late husband had bought for her in 2000 for about $1,200. She said it might have fallen off while she was at the Ruby Isle Pick 'N Save on July 23.

Theft at restaurant: An employee at the Red Robin restaurant at said someone stole $73 out of her wallet July 25. The wallet and her purse were in an employee area.

Syringes found: A woman in the 16300 block of Patricia Lane found two syringes in her front yard and called police July 26 in case they were evidence of drug use.

Controlled burn: A 10-foot-by-15-foot circle of flames 10 feet high were reported by a passing motorist about 4:30 p.m. July 26. Police advised it was a controlled burn that had been approved.

Drunk in the mall food court: A 30-year-old man was taken into protective custody after he passed out in the food court at Brookfield Square mall about 3 p.m. July 29. The man had drank almost four liters of wine over four hours and registered a 0.29 blood-alcohol concentration.

Laptop stolen: A $500 Acer laptop was reported stolen from the office at Argo, 4430 N. 127th St. shortly before noon July 27.

BB gun damage? For the second time in three weeks, employees found broken windows, possibly from a BB gun, at Engineering Specialists, 21360 Gateway Court. The rear window of a 2010 Chevy Malibu had been smashed overnight July 28 but nothing taken.

Domestic dispute: A teenage girl who yelled and hit relatives in anger about household rules was taken to a shelter care after police were called to intervene. The call came shortly before midnight July 28 in the 15700 block of Monet Court.

Child left in car: A 3-year-old girl was left inside an unattended car, with the windows closed, in the parking lot of , 13100 W. Capitol Dr. about 11:30 a.m. July 29. When the manager confronted a woman in her 50s about the child being in the car for 10 to 15 minutes, the woman told the manager to "mind his own business" and hastily left before police arrived.

Child locked in car: A 2-month-old girl was locked in a car parked in a garage in the 18600 block of St. Andrews Lane about noon July 29. The child's grandmother called police after her son was unable to get the car open and then set off the car alarm. Police rescued the girl who was not harmed.

Homeless man squatting in abandoned school? Police were investigating reports that someone apparently had been living in the shuttered building that formerly housed Heritage Christian School, 1275 S. Elm Grove Road. A school representative found an open, ground-level window on July 29.

Later that day, maintenance workers found a makeshift living area set up in a small room under a stairwell in the lower level of the school. The room had living room furniture, fans, a dream catcher, baseball bat and spray paint cans. A mat was found near an air conditioning vent unit elsewhere in the school.

Water main break: Police called the city water utility after getting a report of a water main break in front of , 18105 W. Capitol Dr. about 8:30 p.m. July 29.

Shots fired or other explanation? A man told police he heard six gunshots in the area of Harvey Avenue and Tremont Street about 3:15 p.m. July 30. Police found no evidence of gun shots but did find similar noises in the area from a poorly running lawn mower and another resident using a framing nailer.
