Tharp comes from a school district in Tennessee to succeed longtime superintendent William Hughes.

The Greendale Board of Education has unanimously chosen to be the next superintendent of the Greendale School District.
Tharp will succeed William Hughes, who announced his resignation in April. Tharp will start in September after a final contract is approved.
Greendale's new superintendent is a former high school teacher and an administrator for a high-achieving district in Tennessee. Tharp received his doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from UNC. He also published a book on school reform.

Most recently, Tharp served as assistant superintendent for middle and high schools in Williamson County, Tennessee, at a suburban Nashville district about 10 times the size of Greendale's district.
“Greendale is a wonderful community that my family and I are excited about joining. I am also thrilled about the opportunity to work with the awesome people of this great school system,” said Tharp in a news release. “Together, we will continue the Greendale tradition of providing a high quality educational experience for all students.”

The board based its decision on input gathered from stakeholders in the community. A consulting firm was hired, online surveys and a community forum were conducted, as well as meet and greets with the final two candidates.
“Based on the feedback the board received from our parents, staff, students and community members, we were looking for an experienced educator who is willing to become familiar with and embrace the unique history, culture, expectations and needs of the Greendale community,” said School Board President Joe Crapitto in the release.
Several strong candidates were considered and Dr. Tharp stood out as an innovative leader and a proven team builder who will honor all members of the Greendale educational community,” added Crapitto. “He is a thoughtful and reflective leader who has worked with a diverse student population, while maintaining a strong focus on student learning and achievement.”
