A number of union leaders in the school district took personal days off to go protest the budget repair bill last week, according to Superintendent William Hughes. It is not clear how many teachers or what days they went to protest. Governor Scott Walker's budget repair bill will strip the collective bargaining rights of public employees in an attempt to balance the state budget deficit. Hughes did confirm that the teachers requested personal days off but also said that the teachers will reimburse the district for those days. The union president in the Greendale School District is art teacher Pam Merkel who has previously stated that she believes that the bill is "wrong."
