Family Shares Son's Overdose Story at Teen Drug Prevention Event

The Wednesday event in Maple Grove, MN, is on a crisis that Hudson is also dealing with: abuse of heroin and prescription medicines.

(Becky Glander wrote the original version of this post.)

The sheriff's office in Minnesota's Hennepin County is providing advice to parents regarding drug use among young people—a problem that Hudson too is facing.

Prevention experts will provide parents with simple, practical techniques to help kids make healthy choices and avoid substance abuse from 6:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The event will take place at the Fellowship Hall at Lord of Life Lutheran Church (7401 County Road 101 in Maple Grove, MN). The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office and the Partnership for Change will provide informative speakers during the event.

The Scheig family of Maple Grove will share their story, after recently losing their son, Andrew, to a heroin overdose. Parents and community members are encouraged to bring any unwanted or expired medications to the event. All prescription drugs collected will be properly disposed of by the Sheriff’s Office.

Tragically, 2013 has set a disturbing new record. There have been 43 heroin related overdose deaths through the end of October in Hennepin County– the highest total ever.

Becky Scheig describes the pain of her son's heroin overdose in the attached video by Partnership For Change.
