Football Friday: Hudson Beats Rice Lake 28-21 in OT

The Raiders improved to 1-0 in the Big Rivers Conference and 2-1 overall Friday night with an exciting 28-21 overtime win over Rice Lake.

Rice Lake took a 21-19 lead into the final minutes of the fourth quarter against the Raiders.

Down by 2 points with just 3:13 left in the fourth quarter, the Raiders powered out a huge first down, giving Hudson first and goal from the 2 yard line.

But the Rice Lake defense held strong, keeping the Raiders out of the end zone on three consecutive runs, bringing up a 4th and 1 play.

With 1:30 left in the game, the Raiders decided to go for a touchdown. The Raiders fumbled the snap and Rice Lake took over on the 1 yard line.

On first down, Rice Lake pushed the ball out to about the 5 yard line. Hudson's defense forced a 4th and 3 with 1:11 left in the game.

That's when the Rice Lake long-snapper snapped the ball over the punter's head and out of the back of the end zone for a safety, tying the game up 21-21.

In overtime, Hudson struck first with a touchdown on 3rd and a long 10, and followed up with an extra point, taking a 28-21 lead. The Hudson defense kept Rice Lake out of the end zone, sealing the overtime win.

Update:

After two games across the river in Minnesota, Hudson will host Rice Lake in tonight’s football home opener at Newton Field.

The Raiders (1-1) are coming off of a big 20-0 victory at Chanhassen, while Rice Lake (2-0) dispatched of New Richmond 41-0 last week.

Kickoff is 7 p.m.
