Officers did not fire their weapons while clearing the school.

The injuries of the seven hospitalized range from minor to life-threatening. They are being treated at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.

"Today is a sad, sad day," Police Chief Shon Barnes said at a news conference.

"Yet another police chief is doing a press conference to speak about violence in our community, specifically in one of the places that’s most sacred to me as someone who loves education and to someone who has children that are in schools."

Authorities believe the suspect used a 9mm pistol to carry out the shooting.

Madison police undergo quarterly training for scenarios like Monday's school shooting, with police commanders participating in a session just two weeks ago.

"The protocols are simple: Stop the killing, stop the dying, find out who’s doing this," Barnes said. "The officers did that."

When asked about school security, Barnes said, "I’m not aware that the school had metal detectors, nor do I believe schools should have metal detectors. Schools are meant to be safe spaces."

President Joe Biden has been briefed on the school shooting, and senior White House officials are coordinating with local authorities in Madison to offer support as needed, according to Deputy Press Secretary Emilie Simons.

Gov. Tony Evers said he was "closely monitoring" the incident. "We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond," he said in a statement.

In its first statement since the shooting, Abundant Life shared: "Prayers Requested! Today, we had an active shooter incident at ALCS. We are in the midst of following up. We will share information as we are able. Please pray for our Challenger Family."

Parents and guardians were guided to the nearby Dean Clinic for student reunification.
