Athlete Dies After Competing In Ironman Wisconsin Race

"It is with profound sadness to confirm the death of a race participant during Sunday's IRONMAN Wisconsin triathlon," the organization said.

MADISON, WI — A participant in Sunday's Ironman Wisconsin died during the race, the organization announced. Their identity has yet not been released.

At the bike portion of the triathlon, a race staff member and an off-duty police officer noticed that one of the athletes needed medical attention.

They treated him at the scene before emergency services transported the athlete to a local hospital, where they died.

"It is with profound sadness to confirm the death of a race participant during Sunday’s IRONMAN Wisconsin triathlon," the organization said on its Facebook page.

"We share our deepest condolences with the family and friends of the athlete and will continue to offer them our support as they go through what is a very difficult time. We thank event personnel and first responders who worked to provide the athlete with medical support."

The individual who passed away Sunday was the third Ironman Wisconsin athlete to die since 2019.

In 2019, Micheal McCullough and Todd Mahoney were rescued from the water during the race.

McCullough was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mahoney was hospitalized and died two days later, WMTV reported.
