MADISON, WI — Police have opened an investigation into private photos and video of Badgers volleyball players that were posted online without the athletes’ consent, according to authorities.

Circulating the images could constitute both criminal and school policy violations, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Athletic Department said in a statement posted on Twitter. When the players learned the images had been circulated, they contacted campus police, who are now investigating multiple crimes, including sharing sensitive photos without consent, according to the statement.

“UWPD is not investigating the volleyball student-athletes for wrongdoing in this matter,” the statement said. “Our top priority is supporting our student-athletes and we are providing them with the appropriate services and resources.”

One of the photos showed some players posing with sports bras lifted, apparently after the team took the Big Ten title last year, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported, adding most of the images posted without consent have been taken down.

The Badgers have a 13-3 record for the season so far and are scheduled to play Michigan State University on Friday.
