Wisconsin Doctor Opening 2 Illinois Abortion Clinics Near State Border
One of the clinics may be open as soon as this week, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
ROCKFORD, IL — A Madison doctor has plans to open two abortion clinics in Rockford in order to increase access to the procedure for women in both Illinois and Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
Dr. Dennis Christensen has previously owned and operated women’s clinics in Rockford and Milwaukee, and is taking steps to expand abortion access in Illinois, the Journal reported. A 19th-century law banning abortion in Wisconsin has recently put added pressure on Illinois facilities in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, according to the Journal.
A clinic at 611 Auburn St. may offer abortion pills starting as soon as this week, while a facility at 4236 Maray Drive will provide pill and surgical abortions, but is not expected to open for up to six months, the Journal reported. Abortion remains legal in Wisconsin’s border states of Illinois and Minnesota.
