UPDATE: Falls Man Busted With 65 Pounds of Marijuana and $500,000 Cash

An unemployed 28-year-old Menomonee Falls targeted in a drug bust by the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Metropolitan Drug Unit is facing nearly a century in prison after being charged Wednesday with multiple felonies.

Authorities say they seized 65 pounds of marijuana, 1½ ounces of cocaine,  $500,000 in cash, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo and two ATVs from Robert T. Grintjes during a Monday night raid at a storage unit in Lannon.

Grintjes is now facing a laundry list of charges,  including three counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, two counts of maintaining a drug trafficking place, one count of possession of cocaine with intent to sell, and two counts of marijuana possession with intent to sell.

If convicted on all counts, Grintjes faces a maximum sentence of 98 ½ years in prison, and $260,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court:

At about 6:40 p.m. Monday, officers executed a search warrant at a storage unit leased by Grintjes at W196N7580 Becker Dr. in Lannon. Police recovered 45.4 pounds of marijuana in a large bag from the trunk of a Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Officers then discovered a suitcase in the upper loft of the storage unit that contained another 14.4 pounds of marijuana separated into 16 gallon-sized Ziplock bags.

Authorites then discovered $500,120 in cash locked inside a large gun safe, which was also in the storage unit. Two handguns and a rifle were stashed away in the safe as well. Possession of the firearms was also illegal since Grintjes was convicted of a felony in 2002 for – no surprise – possession of marijuana with intent to sell. Additionally, Grintjes told police that the guns were purchased with cash illegally in Milwaukee.

Lt. Robert Doffek of the Metro Drug Unit said officers found the cash in a large gun safe with the words “Fort Knox” written on the door.

However, the drug bust didn’t end there.

After searching the storage unit, authorities obtained a warrant to search Grintjes apartment on the W15000 block of Apple Valley Drive in Menomonee Falls. When officers arrived, Grintjes was home along with myriad of other drugs and cash.

Grintjes was promptly arrested, and officers found another 5 pounds of marijuana in a dresser, $300 cash, and 1½ ounces of cocaine in the refrigerator.

Grintjes told police that he started selling marijuana at the age of 14, and the $500,000 represented his savings from the past 14 years. He couldn’t recall the last time he held a job and received a regular paycheck.

Law enforcement agencies participating included the Lannon police and fire departments, the Menomonee Falls Police Department, Waukesha County Sheriff's Department patrol division and K-9 unit.
