Firefighters Stay Cool During Training

The Menomonee Falls Fire Department was at Oakwood Park conducting ice water rescue training Tuesday.

There's nothing like taking a refreshing dip in the pond at Oakwood Park in the middle of January right?

That's exactly what firefighters in the did Tuesday morning and evening as part of their ice rescue training.

Although your trusty editor sipped a hot cup of coffee from to wake up this morning, it's likely that wasn't necessary to awaken the firefighters who waded in the frigid water.

Every firefighter with the MFFD goes through this training to prepare for potential winter calls on the ice. Firefighters alternated playing the role of the victim while another firefighter practiced getting them out of the water safely.

To escape the freezing water, rescuers grab a rope and are pulled out by a group of firefighters near the shoreline. Before they step out on the ice, firefighters complete a classroom portion of the training.
