Girls Defeat the Boys in Charity Soccer Match

The athletic contest, affectionately referred to as Futbol vs. Football, pitted the Menomonee Falls varsity football team against the varsity girls soccer team in a friendly match with 30-minute halves.

A penalty kick in the final minute determined the winner of the nail-biting, inaugural Go Pink charity soccer game Saturday night.

It came off the foot of senior midfielder Jenna Woodson, who sent the girls home winners, 4-3.

The charity game raised more than $2,000 to fight breast cancer. It included a cookout and raffle.

The athletic contest, affectionately referred to as Futbol vs. Football, pitted the varsity football team against the varsity girls soccer team in a friendly match with 30-minute halves.

The footballers were called for a penalty in the 59th minute, albeit from two officials who once played for the girls’ coach, Scott Stein.

Woodson promptly left-footed the ball by goalie Ian Grisham.

“I knew where I was going to place it and I knew he wasn’t going to get it,” said Woodson.

Stein was quick to note the mismatch in size after the game.

“It’s probably the biggest team we’ve ever beaten,” he said.

“Yes, definitely,” said Woodson.

Football coach John Baker wasn’t remotely upset at walking off the field winless in every Go Pink game ever played in Menomonee Falls history.

“Actually, this is so much fun,” he said.

The officiating was called into question, however.

“I couldn’t believe the refs,” Baker said.

“I’d like to thank the refs,” added Stein.

The girls came into the game off of taking the no. 1 ranked team to the wire, losing a 4-3 battle to Cedarburg two days earlier. Rachel Clayton scored a hat trick for the Indians, all within a 10-minute stretch in the second half.

Menomonee Falls (15-5-2, not counting its Go Pink victory), closed out its regular season with a 6-0 demolish of West Allis Hale on Tuesday before heading into the playoffs. Woodson said the Go Pink win and close call against Cedarburg will provide some momentum.

It won’t hurt that the Indians are healthy.

“After today, we came out of it injury free,” Stein said Saturday night.

The boys, despite the devastating loss, will suit ‘em up for football again this fall and will no doubt be glad to get back to a sport in which they know what offsides really means.

Game notes: Saturday was Emily Bollman’s 18th birthday; Tommy Marron’s play-by-play would make Jerry Mislang proud.
