Help Send Special Olympian's Family to Athens

Chicken and spaghetti dinner will be held Saturday to raise funds to send the family of Becca Stelpflug to Athens, Greece for the Special Olympics World Games.

The aquatic talents of Menomonee Falls’ will send her across the Atlantic Ocean to compete in the Special Olympics in Athens, Greece this summer. However, you can help ensure the rest of her family makes the trip as well to witness her milestone achievement.

A chicken and spaghetti dinner will be held from noon to 6:30 p.m. at the , W164N9161 Water St. All proceeds from the event will help send Stelpflug’s family to the World Games.

Stelpflug is a medal-winning swimmer. She competed in the Special Olympics national games in Lincoln, Neb., in 2009, and she will compete in the 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle, 100-meter backstroke and in a relay event in Athens.

More than 7,500 athletes from around the world will compete in the event, which runs from June 25 to July 4. Stelpflug has come a long way, going from someone who was the slowest swimmer in her group to the fastest.

Stelpflug’s story began in Peru, where she was born 20 years ago. When she was two months old, Becca was adopted by Rita Stelpflug.  Becca suffers from short-term memory loss and has spent her years in the special education program in the Menomonee Falls School District. She has struggled in the classroom but has persevered. She expects to graduate from Menomonee Falls in 2012.

Saturday’s event will also include a silent auction and door prizes. Tickets are $8 for a chicken dinner, and $7 for a spaghetti dinner. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or advanced tickets can be purchased by calling Christ the King Lutheran Church at (262) 781-7600. Donations can also be made directly to any U.S. Bank for “Becca’s Family Greece Trip.”
