Police Beat: A High-Speed Chase, Abandoned Cats and a Smash and Grab

Last week, the needed not one, but two chances to assist halting a high-speed pursuit that started in Washington County.

At 10:32 p.m. Jan. 13, MFPD officers were dispatched to U.S. Highway 41 at the County Line Road exit to assist the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. Officers were in pursuit of a black Lexus, which was traveling southbound at reported speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

MFPD officers deployed a “Stop-Stick” near the County Line Road exit, which the suspect evaded. A second was deployed successfully near the Pilgrim Road exit. The suspect continued to travel south, and into Milwaukee County. Washington County called off the pursuit after the suspect crossed over into Milwaukee County. The identity of the driver was unknown at the time of the report.

Abandoned cats

The former owner of a home on the W16600 block of Cumberland Road could be cited with animal neglect and abuse after leaving four cats in the residence without food or water. The owner left the cats in the house after moving out due to foreclosure two weeks prior to Jan. 11 when the MFPD was contacted. The owner may be in Florida or Alaska, but the person’s whereabouts are still unknown.

Theft from vehicles

Between 4:30 p.m. and 5:02 p.m. Monday, a suspect smashed the windows and stole purses from two vehicles parked at the . Police believe this incident is related to ongoing thefts from vehicles at the YMCA.

• On Jan. 12, Two men were cited after stealing roughly 30 pieces of copper piping from the construction site on the corner of Main Street and Pilgrim Road. One man said they took the piping thinking it was “junk” and “free.” The site manager was contacted an didn’t wish to prosecute the men, however they did receive citations for prowling.
• At 2:45 a.m. Saturday, officers stopped a 22-year-old Lannon woman for a registration and lamp violation while she was driving on Silver Spring Drive and Ridgewood Drive. The officer detected the odor of intoxicants, and the woman blew a 0.20 on a preliminary breath test on the scene. She received a citation for her second-offense OWI, and a PAC second offense.
• Sometime between 8 a.m. Jan. 12 and 8 a.m. Monday, an unknown vehicle drove on the soccer fields at , N68W6895 Aspen Dr. The suspect apparently drove recklessly through the field and caused ruts in the lawn. The joyride caused an estimated $500 of damage to the fields. Neighbors were contacted, however no one had heard or seen a thing.
• At 1:06 p.m. Wednesday, the MFPD received a complaint regarding three abandoned vehicles in a property lot on the northwest corner of Hayes Avenue and Roosevelt Drive. The village Zoning Department provided information on the lot’s owner, but police were unable to contact the owner.
• A white dog bit a 69-year-old man at 3:25 p.m. Wednesday near Lone Oak Lane and Grayeland Drive. The man said two white dogs ran out of a home and one bit him on the knee breaking the skin. Police warned the dog’s owner about harboring a vicious animal, and ordered him to quarantine the dog for 10 days.
• At 3:55 p.m. Tuesday, officers issued citations to the owner and an employee of Marathon gas station, N48W14738 Lisbon Rd., after they discovered the staff member selling alcohol without a proper permit. The unlicensed staff member was the only person working at the time.
• At 12:19 a.m. police arrested a man for possession of marijuana after he was stopped for driving an unregistered vehicle on U.S. Highway 41 at Main Street. Police detected the odor of burnt marijuana in the vehicle, and he was arrested and cited.
