Milwaukee County Zoo: 17-Year-Old Tiger Humanely Euthanized

Amba, a popular resident at the zoo, was recently humanely euthanized following serious health issues.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — The Milwaukee County Zoo announced the passing of one of its most majestic feline stars.

Amba, a popular resident at the zoo, was recently humanely euthanized after experiencing a declining quality of life due to serious health issues, according to zoo officials. She was 17 years old.

Zoo officials said Amba had five offspring and displayed excellent maternal care, even allowing her care team to be with the cubs if they were sick.

"She's overcome multiple health issues, proving to us that she was never to be underestimated. We will greatly miss the matriarch of Big Cat Country," the zoo via its official Facebook page.

The median life expectancy for female Amur tigers in human care is 14.3 years.
