Gas Tank Getaways: Capitol Square in Madison is Home to Large Farmers' Market
Spring through fall, explore the farmers' market that takes over Capitol Square from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Dane County Farmers' Market is the largest producer-only farmers' market in the country, according to the market's website. Everything for sale is produced locally, by the vendor there to sell: No resales are allowed.
It's not hard to believe the market is the country's largest. Vendor stalls and tables fill the square around the state capitol building, and thousands come each Saturday from mid-April to early November to shop.
Where: The market fills the sidewalks around the state capitol. There are lots of public parking ramps nearby.
When: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, mid-April through early November.

How much: Admission is free, but bring cash to spend on honey, maple syrup, produce, fresh flowers and more.
Special treat: Grab a bite to eat from one of the many carts that sell food around the square that day, or munch on fresh fruits and vegetables as you walk. State Street, the popular pedestrian thoroughfare, extends off one corner of the square, and is another great place to walk, find lunch or watch the crowds.
