Gas Tank Getaways: Wirth Park and Aquatic Center Offers Swimming to Skateboarding

Whether the goal is lounging poolside, skateboarding, playing summer sports or hiking trails,  and  in Brookfield has visitors covered.
Wirth Aquatic Center, open until late August, features a 50-meter pool with 1- and 3-meter diving boards, and a zero depth pool for younger children. There is a flume slide, as well as geysers, a spray feature, a sunbathing deck with umbrella-covered tables and a children's playground with sand area. Men's and women's locker rooms and a concession stand also are available. 
The aquatic center is located within Wirth Park, a 145-acre city park that has a skateboarding facility, two sand volleyball courts, picnic areas and shelters with restrooms, five ball diamonds, three soccer fields, eight tennis courts, nature trails and bike paths. (In winter, there are two sledding hills and an ice hockey rink.)
The Jaycees Skatepark is a 12,000-square-foot concrete facility featuring pyramids, ramps, spines, transitions, a fun box and more. It's free but not supervised and limited to skateboards and inline skates.

Where: Wirth Aquatic Center, 2585 N. Pilgrim Road, is in Brookfield, WI, about four miles west of the I-45 exit ramp at North Avenue (Mayfair Mall). The Aquatic Center lies within the 145-acre Wirth Park, located just northwest of the intersection of North Avenue and Pilgrim Road.

When: On weekdays, the zero depth pool is open from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the full aquatic center is open from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. From Aug. 9 to 20 only, the full center is open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m without the 4:30 p.m. closure.
On Saturday and Sunday, the full facility is open from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. (It will be closed Sunday July 10 for an Elmbrook Swim Club Swim Meet.)

How much: Daily admission for City of Brookfield residents is $3.75 for adults, $2.75 for children ages 3 to 17 and seniors and free for children ages 2 and younger. Admission rates for non-residents are slightly higher.
Admission to just the morning zero-depth pool is $2.50 for adults, $2 for children ages 3 to 17 and seniors and free for children 2 and younger. 

Special treat: If visitors travel to Wirth on any , they could plan to also enjoy a free , bringing their own picnic dinner and wine. A trip to Wirth Park on July 15 also could be combined to take in some of an all-day pro-am racing tournament that will be riding through the city's Civic Plaza, with music and food.
