Man Sped, Drove Drunk With 11-Month-Old Twins: Police

Police say a man faces his sixth drunken driving charge after he sped more than 40 miles over the limit with 11-month-old twins in his truck

MOUNT PLEASANT, WI — Authorities in Racine County say a 45-year-old Milwaukee man has been arrested after officers stopped him for speeding more than 40 miles per hour with 11-month-old twins and a 6-year-old child in the truck.

Mount Pleasant police say an officer was patrolling Highway 32 in Mount Pleasant when he saw the driver of a red Chevrolet Tahoe driving 89 miles per hour along a 45-mile-per-hour stretch of road at just after midnight on Thursday.

Police said the driver, later identified as Vaughn T. Hess tried to turn off on a dead-end road to avoid the officer, but had to turn around. He was eventually stopped by police, and the officer suspected he may have been drinking and driving.

According to police, Hess failed standard field sobriety tests, and a preliminary breath test given by police on-scene returned a preliminary blood alcohol concentration of .135 - greater than the legal limit for drunken driving in Wisconsin.

Police say that an officer found two 11-month-old twins in car seats and a 6-year-old inside Hess' vehicle. According to court records, Hess is currently on Probation for injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle.

The children were turned over to their mother, who arrived on scene, police said. Mount Pleasant police say they're recommending Hess be charged with his sixth drunken driving offense, in addition to other violations.
