RACINE COUNTY, WI — The coronavirus public health emergency has mean Racine Unified School district students have been off school since mid-March, but by April 6, they'll be starting a district-led remote learning program, district officials said.

In a bulletin issued by district officials on Tuesday afternoon, school teachers will be reaching out to parents over how to provide materials electronically via email or in paper form through the mail starting on April 1.

According to RUSD officials, the work will not be graded, except for high school students in the coming weeks. ACT prep packets will be available on the District website and at the meal distribution sites, and will cover math, science, English and social studies for high school students.

RUSD officials said they're also developing a grading plan for high schools to address the third and fourth quarters. "More information will be provided after spring break," district officials said.

"We know this new reality poses a big challenge for our families. You are now responsible for ensuring that your child participates in daily learning activities while juggling many other responsibilities," Rosalie Daca, Chief Academic Officer, said. "Knowing this, we are working to set reasonable expectations for the amount of daily work time expected and will provide activities that parents can easily support at home."

Guidelines for the number of hours students should be expected to work on academics vary by grade level:

Grades K-2: 1 hour per day
Grades 3-5: 2 hours per day
Grades 6-12: 3 hours per day

"As we embark on this new way of learning together while apart, we ask that you allow us some grace. Surely there will be some bumps and we will grow from them. Our focus will remain on supporting our students and families until we can welcome you back into our schools," Daca said.
