Teen Faces Attempted Homicide Charge; Held On $100,000 Bond

Racine police say a 17-year-old faces an attempted homicide charge after he shot another teen in the chest at close range in August.

RACINE, WI — A 17-year-old from Racine has been charged with attempted homicide after authorities say he shot another teen at close range near Knapp School.

According to a criminal complaint filed in Racine County, Jamari Jones, 17, of Racine, has been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, attempted armed robbery, discharging a firearm in a school zone among other charges.

Jones faces up to life in prison and is currently being held in the Racine County Jail on a $100,000 cash bond.

Officers were sent to the 3500 block of Victory Ave. on Aug. 14 after learning a person was shot in the chest, authorities said. First responders determined the shooting victim had a collapsed lung as a result of the shooting. The victim and was then transported to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee via Flight for Life, the criminal complaint stated.

Police said they found seven shell casings related to the shooting in an alley on the 1600 block of Deane Blvd. A witness reported coming forward with more shell casings, investigators said.

According to Racine police, investigators watched video surveillance footage showing a man point a gun at the victim's chest and fire several times before running off.

Police said they were able to confirm Jones as the shooter after watching the surveillance video, and speaking with the victim at the hospital. According to the complaint, the victim told police he believed Jones shot him out of retaliation "but could not say what the retaliation was for."

Police say they caught up with Jones after stopping a vehicle on Sep. 4 on Washington Ave. just west of Grange Ave. Authorities said Jones was sitting in the front passenger seat, and was later arrested.
